Constructing the perfect Yankees lineup for 2021 season
By Adam Weinrib
Batting Sixth: Aaron Hicks, CF
The Yankees have one of the best eyes in baseball up sixth.
Ideally, after Giancarlo Stanton has just cleared the bases, it’ll be Aaron Hicks’ job to get a rally started again with his patented exceptional eye.
Sure, we’ll allow him to hit one to the sticks on occasion, too. But putting a power/speed/on-base combo in the sixth spot ensures that each miniature portion of this lineup has its own motor.
Stanton clears the traffic away with one emphatic flourish, and Hicks puts the pressure right back on the pitcher once more. Trying to get away with a quick strike? He’ll crush it. Too scared to come into the zone? Not a problem; he’ll sit back and watch.
Even in Hicks’ down 2020 season in which he admits he never felt quite right, he posted a remarkable .379 OBP with a .225 average. If Hicksy can even bump that average up 40 points, he’d be among the most effective on-base threats in the game.
What a perfect six-hole hitter for the foreseeable future.
