MLB columnist thinks Yankees have best chance to sign Trevor Bauer
It appears as if they’re still buzz surrounding the Yankees and Trevor Bauer.
We guess the media will continue to shove this square peg into the round hole until the hole completely breaks and we can’t use our favorite little kid’s toy anymore. Or maybe the New York Yankees are doing it. Nobody really knows, but such is life during MLB free agency. Anything and everthing is possible!
On this lovely Sunday morning, as things continue to remain stagnant, there’s more buzz (if you want to call it that) surrounding the Yankees and star free agent pitcher Trevor Bauer, despite the fact New York has expressed an unwillingness to spend coupled with Bauer’s personality hardly being a fit with the Bombers.
Then again, the Yanks are desperate for a No. 2 starter, so this connection will persist until Bauer signs elsewhere.
You might remember Will Leitch from his days with Deadspin — he founded the famed sports blog that has since tumbled down hill after the mess at G/O Media. Now, he’s a columnist with MLB and he just ranked his free agent destinations for Bauer, with the Yankees topping the list.
What’s even more surprising than that, though? The Red Sox come in at No. 2 and the presumed favorite Mets are No. 8. This just goes to show the 2021 offseason could be one of the most unpredictable ever!
When you think about it, the Yankees adding Bauer isn’t that crazy even though we’ve repeatedly talked about how it isn’t a fit because of his heavy social media presence and his past beef with ace Gerrit Cole. But the truth is that the Yankees need at least one more veteran starter and could potentially add two, which would cost them at least $20 million if we’re safely estimating (let’s say, Masahiro Tanaka and Adam Wainwright, as examples).
But signing an aspiring ace-like arm in Bauer for ~$25 million per year would only cost a little bit more and avoid the Yanks from having to bring in two guys, which could hinder the development of someone like Clarke Schmidt, who fans really want to see in 2021.
Honestly, who knows, we’re just spitballing and trying to make sense of this because baseball insiders seem to think this match is very much a possibility. If that’s indeed the case, then there’s our rationale. The Yankees’ rotation would be set for the next five years and there’d be little to worry about.
But are they willing to spend that big with other roster needs?
