Insane Kris Bryant trade rumor proves Yankees need to call Cubs immediately

The Yankees should inquire about Kris Bryant if these rumors hold any weight.

The offseason continues to move at a snail’s pace and everything’s far from being in focus. So let’s throw the New York Yankees into another potential trade scenario, shall we? There aren’t many other better things to do right now.

We’ve dissected possible trades with the Chicago Cubs for quite some time now. The NL Central team appears to be headed in a different direction, with Theo Epstein stepping down and with so many star players entering contract years. The possibilities are endless if the Cubs are truly going to open up shop.

At this juncture, it feels like Kris Bryant being traded is a foregone conclusion. He’ll be a free agent after 2021. He’s going to earn a hefty amount in his final year of arbitration eligibility this offseason. He’s got a bad relationship with the franchise, which has clearly opted not to prioritize him.

And if this is what Bryant will be fetching on the trade market, then the Yankees simply have to give the Cubs a call.

We’re not advocating for an earth-shattering roster move this offseason by any means. Though we’ve talked about guys like Francisco Lindor, Trevor Bauer, Nolan Arenado and others, it just doesn’t really make sense for the Yankees to disrupt this chemistry in the form of a blockbuster trade or mega contract that’s not necessarily needed.

But if Bryant could be had for a mediocre player like Starlin Castro, who’s making $6 million in 2021, you mean to tell us the Yankees can’t swoop in with a better offer that would still hardly affect the status quo in the Bronx? We don’t know what it would look like, but if this is how whacky things are on the trade market, then anything’s possible.

This would obviously mean Gio Urshela would have to be displaced, but maybe adding Bryant and dangling Urshela for a pitcher could work? Or maybe the Yankees work on a larger blockbuster with the Cubs that includes Urshela and Kyle Hendricks so they can get that No. 2 starter they’ve long desired?

All we’re saying is that if we’re Brian Cashman and we see Starlin Castro could potentially net Kris Bryant for the 2021 season, then Jed Hoyer’s gotta be on Line 1 to tell us what the heck is going on.
