The Yankees could lose DJ LeMahieu this offseason? Fact. Are there any facts in this story about the Mets and Red Sox? No.

In this day and age, it’s difficult to deal with a field of readers who will yell, “Clickbait!” when they really mean, “This is an article!” But folks, this New York Post article about key Yankees free agent DJ LeMahieuThis is the clickbait-iest.

Every Yankees fan is on edge these days, and will be until the exact second that LeMahieu’s pen hits paper to re-up his loyalty to the Bombers. And we get that.

Which is why the New York Post released a column specifically intended to send thousands of New Yorkers’ blood pressure like mercury through the top of a thermometer.

THE HEADLINE: “Yankees could lose DJ LeMahieu to Mets or Red Sox in MLB free agency”.

THE BODY: “Eh, yeah, there are a lot of baseball teams. The list of baseball teams includes the Mets and Red Sox. DJ LeMahieu is a free agent. You do the math.”

After running through the basic details of LeMahieu’s approach to free agency, the first mention of the Red Sox occurs deep into this article, and reads thusly:

"“The rebuilding Red Sox are also in need of a second baseman, and Tampa Bay was in the mix for LeMahieu before he signed with the Yankees last time, although he might be out of the Rays’ price range now.”"

So this article knows just as much about Boston’s needs and desires as we do. They currently don’t have a second baseman entrenched, even though Michael Chavis seems likely to take over that job. DJ LeMahieu plays second base. Dots are being connected!

“We called the Red Sox and left a voicemail, which they didn’t return. This tells us the LeMahieu pursuit could be heating up, or the office could be closed, or we might’ve called the wrong number,” the Post continued.

And then there’s the Mets. Are we all sort of worried Steve Cohen could stick it to the Yankees by overpaying for LeMahieu, even though he doesn’t fit anywhere? I guess! Did the Post have anything else to base their argument on other than that abstract fear? No way!

"And then there are the Mets, with new owner Steve Cohen’s billions. They could play LeMahieu at third base or, if the DH is used again in the National League next year, shift Robinson Cano there, with LeMahieu playing second."

Now, are there obstacles to the Yankees bringing LeMahieu home? Of course there are! Are they these obstacles? No.

If LeMahieu ends up a Red Sox or Mets star instead of a Yankee, an absolute ton of things will have gone wrong, and nervous fans have to be prepared for every last possibility.

But fans encountering this headline and fans encountering the article itself will have vastly different emotions. And there’s no reason to coax bile out of our esophaguses at a time like this.

Come on, man, it’s the holidays.
