Worried about the Blue Jays supplementing their core, Yankees fans? Well, you should be.

Alex Cora was re-hired by the Red Sox, you say? That’s cute. Until they get a starting rotation, Yankees fans are going to continue worrying about the Blue Jays, though.

Currently, Toronto has unparalleled financial flexibility, and they gave the Yankees fits down the stretch (we shrug it off now, but when the NYY were in the midst of a losing stretch, it was getting embarrassing).

According to a few media sources and the prediction market, it’s about to get worse, as Toronto is reportedly ready to spend and fortify their young core with a few more expensive options on the open market.

First they leave Buffalo, now this?!

Of course, the question now becomes: What does that mean? The return of Marcus Stroman? A pursuit of Trevor Bauer, someone whom Yankees fans don’t entirely care about?

Or does that mean DJ LeMahieu, as a few people have theorized? Please say “sike,” MLB Trade Rumors. Please say it.

Whatever horror is en route, the Jays opened their offseason on Saturday by adding Robbie Ray on a one-year, $8 million deal. Someone who was once a Yankees target is now a semi-cheap Toronto addition, who may eventually seem too expensive, once this offseason wraps up.

An $8 million expenditure on a potential three starter might not seem too extravagant, but remember, you’re probably thinking about pre-2020 spending. If Brad Hand isn’t worth $10 million for one year, why would Ray be worth slightly less that that?

Who knows. We certainly don’t! But if this type of deal ends up being richer than most in this market, then the Jays are certainly threats to poach LeMahieu, especially on the cusp of the opening of their window. Cross your fingers that none of this matters, but it’s worth being fearful of right now.
