It’s safe to say Yankees fans forgot about these guys the team needs to figure out roles for.

Everyone’s clamoring for the New York Yankees to make more additions this offseason, but many are forgetting that they have a ton of players that they’ll either need to get rid of or find roles for. You can’t just keep incessantly adding people every year without making corresponding moves or figuring out what to do with your own guys!

And when you take into account the fact New York has under $35 million to spend before reaching the luxury tax threshold, there are a lot more issues than you might think.

Plus, over the last few years, the Bombers have carved out roles for quite a few productive players before they fell off a cliff, didn’t entirely develop as we had hoped, or were limited with injuries. What is general manager Brian Cashman going to do with Mike Tauchman, Miguel Andujar and Thairo Estrada?

We haven’t heard a peep about ANY of these guys for the last month-and-a-half, and the fact that nobody is mentioning them in regards to the team’s need for defensive versatility, a left-handed bat, and a contact hitter speaks volumes. Fans must not be confident in any of these guys, and it’s clear the organization probably isn’t, either.

All three of them disappeared as the year progressed, especially in the final six weeks of the regular season. They weren’t injured. They were fully healthy. Clint Frazier’s play forced Tauchman out. Andujar’s inability to play the outfield got him phased out. Tyler Wade pushed Estrada away as time went on.

Perhaps all of these guys deserve more of a fair shake. We don’t disagree. But it’s clear that will be elsewhere. The Yankees don’t have time to keep giving them time. This is a World Series-ready team. There are no more “projects” to undertake.

Whether it’s non-tendering a contract to these guys or finding them another home in a trade (and selling extremely low), that’ll probably be their fate. The Yankees might hold on to Tauchman for some left-handed hitting insurance in the outfield at a very cheap price, but that’s it. Estrada is a redundant utility player and Andujar’s agent went out of his way to call out the Yankees towards the end of the season.

I guess there’s a reason so many of us forgot about these guys … because they’ll probably be gone or further de-emphasized in 2021.
