Yankees: Rays brushing back Gio Urshela and Gleyber Torres proves they’re hypocrites

The Rays threw at Yankees stars Gio Urshela and Gleyber Torres in ALDS Game 1. Hypocrite babies.

Remember when Kevin Cash got up on his soapbox and declared Aroldis Chapman’s brushback pitches in the ninth inning of a Yankees victory over the Rays to be the biggest indictment of mankind’s downward slope this side of a banging trash can?

Remember the next day when Michael Brosseau hit a redemptive regular season homer, and the Rays had tears in their eyes? Because they had overcome tyranny and the big bad Yankees and taken the highest of roads?

Moral superiority, thy name is Tampa. Who cares that Cash threatened to strike back at the Yankees after calling Aaron Boone incompetent, indicting his “poor coaching,” right? The “Stable” comment was just innocent! He was sticking up for his guys! It’s clear the Rays would never throw fastballs at the Yankees’ heads in a moment of frustrati–I’m sorry, what? Did I watch Game 1 of the ALDS?

Specifically the ninth inning, immediately after Giancarlo Stanton’s thunderous grand slam made it a 9-3 ballgame and Cash left reliever John Curtiss on the mound to roll around in his own mess for a while? No, what’d I miss?

Huh! Would you look at that?! Rays fans, your rebuttal?

“Whoa, he didn’t do it on purpose! He’s just wild! Must be bad coaching or something.”

Remember, here’s that quote again from when Brosseau went deep and the Rays sobbed all over the dugout, just so you realize I’m not exaggerating.

I mean, he meant “eyes,” but……….come on. One month later, there you are, participating in the same activity you once cried about being a victim of.

Inexplicably, Gleyber Torres has garnered more attention from the baseball media for stealing a base up 9-3 than Cash’s Rays have attracted for buzzing the tower on not one but two batters in the wake of their own failure. If the game was “over” at that point, as Pedro Martinez seemed to imply, then what was the point of intimidating the Yankees hitters with some cheddar at the head?

Sure, it’s a part of baseball, and Curtiss was tired and frustrated. But just last month, the Rays became America’s darlings by standing up to the Yankees’ frightful fastballs and attempting to make an example of their closer.

Now, we’re in the playoffs, and the dangerous fastballs are whizzing from inside their glass house.

One’s an accident. Two’s a trend. See you for the rest of the series, Stable. We’d certainly hate to beat a dead horse.
