The Yankees are headed to Petco Park for the ALDS and that’s good news for Giancarlo Stanton.

Prior to the conclusion of the AL Wild Card Series against the Cleveland Indians, we were admittedly worried about Giancarlo Stanton. And it wasn’t just because we have nothing better to do than complain. It was all in the stats for the New York Yankees‘ slugger.

Since coming off the injured list on Sept. 15, the slugger was just 7-for-35 with one home run, four RBI, five walks and an astounding 16 strikeouts. That was across nine games. Very bad, and very discouraging with the postseason already here.

But then came the Bombers’ trip to Progressive Field and Stanton woke up a little bit. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but he’s 2-for-7 with three runs scored, two homers, three RBI and two walks. Yankees fans will take that all day.

Now that he’s starting to heat up, let’s get really excited for where he’s about to play.

The Yankees will now travel to San Diego to face the Tampa Bay Rays at Petco Park for the ALDS and Stanton is quite familiar with that venue during his days with the Miami Marlins. He also obliterated a two-run homer there during the World Baseball Classic when the USA took on the Dominican Republic back in 2017.

But all in all, he’s hitting .323 with a 1.190 OPS, 11 runs scored, 8 home runs, 15 RBI and 12 walks in 19 career games on the Padres’ home turf. He’s actually pretty good at Tropicana Field too (.296 with a .947 OPS, 18 runs scored, 5 home runs, 18 RBI and 15 walks in 26 games), but the Yankees as a whole aren’t, and we hate it there too.

Yankees fans can only hope Stanton carries on the legacy of “Slam Diego” during his stay next week because nothing will be better than booting the Rays from the postseason after they embarrassed New York during the regular season and then celebrated at their expense with corny customized hats and shirts.

See you on Monday.
