Kevin Cash’s loud mouth likely got the wheels turning for the Yankees’ suspensions.
Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash whined his way into a one-game suspension, but brought the New York Yankees down with him. Manager Aaron Boone will serve a ban Wednesday night and Aroldis Chapman, though he’ll be playing as he plans to appeal, was slapped with a three-game suspension.
After Chapman nearly took Rays infielder Mike Brosseau’s head off with a 101 MPH fastball, Cash tirelessly complained to the umpires, which got both teams a warning, and then went ballistic in the postgame media session.
He called out just about everyone you can think of, and took shots at Boone, stating Chapman’s antics were a product of “poor judgement, poor coaching and poor teaching.” When you consider the Rays have been throwing up and in to Yankees batters for the last two seasons, you can’t help but laugh. Want to laugh even harder, though?
Boone just clowned Cash when discussing the suspension.
What a way to ride off into the sunset with the series finale about to go down. Neither manager will see the field, but Boone’s parting comments here should make for primetime television if these clubs meet in the postseason because Wednesday night will be their final matchup of the regular season.
Aaron Boone Suspension: Yankees Manager Disagrees
Boone also commented on the league’s decision to suspend him, and while he didn’t agree with it, he respects the process and will sit out.
Major League Baseball set a harsh precedent when commissioner Rob Manfred slapped Los Angeles Dodgers’ Joe Kelly with an eight-game penalty for throwing at Alex Bregman and Carlos Correa (though he didn’t hit either of them) earlier in the year. Given how big of a stink Cash made about this ordeal, something was bound to happen.
It truly makes you wonder if Cash did this to bring the league’s attention to the situation. Yes, the Rays manager got one game himself, but if the Yankees do lose Chapman for three games, that’ll be much more impactful. The umps might not issue warnings if he doesn’t come out of the dugout yelling and the league might not take notice if he doesn’t rant and rave in his postgame presser.
Just sayin’!
Either way, Boone will “tighten up his coaching techniques” while he serves a confounding punishment. Cash, who openly threatened the Yankees (on live television!), should probably do the same, because the Rays have been the instigators here dating back to 2018.
Yankees: Aroldis Chapman starts postgame fight with terrifying brushback pitch
The Tampa Bay Rays objected to New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman's 101-mph fastball at Michael Brosseau's head. Everybody fought.
