The Yankees probable Opening Day lineup is just unfair.
If the final Yankees tune-up for the 2020 regular season was any indication, the club is ready to hit the ground running.
Though the home run barrage from over the weekend against the Mets didn’t quite extend to Monday night’s exhibition against the Philadelphia Phillies, there is plenty of reason to feel optimistic about how sharp New York has looked.
What was so ironic about the Yankees only mustering two runs against Philly was that manager Aaron Boone deployed the death lineup. To nobody’s surprise, the third-year skipper is planning to roll out the same card for the Opening Day clash versus the Washington Nationals on Thursday.
Even Nats ace and projected starter Max Scherzer, who normally fears nothing, should become weak in the knees after reading the names featured.
The main takeaway is DJ LeMahieu hitting leadoff less than a week after reporting to the team following a battle with the coronavirus. Boone had previously said that it would be a long shot for the three-time All-Star to be in the Opening Day lineup, but it’s clear that he’s passed all of the physical tests thus far, despite not recording a hit during this weekend’s exhibition play.
Last season proved that LeMahieu changes the entire dynamic of the lineup, but the rest of the card literally has zero weak spots that opposing pitchers can exploit. To think that Gio Urshela, who hit .314/.355/.534 with 21 home runs and 74 RBI in 2019, is hitting ninth is nothing short of ridiculous.

This is probably the lineup that Boone will utilize for most of the campaign, and Yankees fans should be counting down the minutes until 7 p.m. ET on Thursday night. It’s just a shame that we won’t be able to witness them wreak havoc for a full 162-game season.
