Yankees infielder Gleyber Torres has one thing on his mind entering the 2020 season.

Yankees fans will be hoping that the club finally gets over the hump and brings a World Series title back home to the Bronx, where it belongs. In New York’s defense, their last three postseason defeats came at the hands of teams — the Houston Astros (twice) and Boston Red Sox — that were allegedly deploying complex sign-stealing operations.

With (hopefully) no cheaters to worry about in 2020, the Yankees are positioned better than ever to capture their 28th world championship. Anything less will be considered a disappointment and Gleyber Torres is clearly embodying that mindset as we inch closer to the start of the regular season.

The two-time All-Star’s comments on wanting to win the World Series are guaranteed to fire up the fan base.

“Last year is in the past right now,” Torres told reporters on Monday. “We forgot that. Our mentality and our focus is on the short season right now. We have a mission; the mission is winning everything. That is the job, that’s the focus and mentality, and we’re preparing right now to get there.”

Any fans worried that the four-month layoff might affect New York’s ultimate goal can go right ahead and accept defeat. If it’s at all possible, Torres’ comments make it seem like the team’s ambitions are as potent as they’ve been since Jose Altuve sent them packing in Game 6 of the 2019 ALCS with a walk off two-run home run off closer Aroldis Chapman.

The good news for the Yankees is that Torres is going to do everything in his power to help them compete for a championship. He might only be 23 years old, but the young stud’s unshakable mindset proves that he’s one of the leaders in New York’s clubhouse.
