New York Yankees outfielder Clint Frazier explained why he’s choosing to wear a mask while playing.
For reasons we’ll never understand, the use of masks has been a controversial topic throughout the country despite multiple states experiencing concerning surges in positive coronavirus cases.
We’ve all seen videos of disturbed and mask-less individuals in public go viral on social media, so it would be nice for an individual with a notable platform to step up and set an example to try and mitigate the madness.
Well, look no further than New York Yankees outfielder Clint Frazier, who’s been one of the few players in MLB (and only Yankee) to wear a mask while playing in Summer Camp.
The 25-year-old slugger’s recent explanation of why he’s doing so will hopefully teach all the stubborn folks out there a long overdue lesson. First and foremost, Frazier wants to keep himself and his teammates as safe as possible.
“I’m going to try to do it as much as I can,” Frazier told reporters during a conference call on Sunday. “Hopefully someone sees it and hopefully they do it too. There are two people in the box with me, and I think it’s an easy thing to do. I am just overall trying to do the best part I can do (to help everyone stay healthy).”
But also, Frazier knows the stakes. Players are coming down with the virus and are forced out of action, which could give rise to an opportunity during the shortened season. He’s been deprived of consistent playing time the last few years and he’s not going to let COVID-19 make that happen again.
When you consider that Frazier is potentially compromising his game leading up to what could be a make-or-break season as it pertains to his future with the Yankees to prioritize the health of his teammates is precisely the mentality that the nation needs right now.
To think that he’s making this significant of a sacrifice while folks entering convenience stores for no more than 10 minutes can’t even be bothered to wear a mask is why this is such a prominent topic of conversation.
It’s certainly not required, but we’re hopeful that more players will join the likes of Frazier and superstar Mike Trout, who’s been doing the same with the Los Angeles Angels, in wearing masks on the diamond. Baseball will be the first of America’s four major sports to return to action amid the pandemic, so the players will have a massive opportunity to send a powerful message to our divided country.
