Yankees first-round draft pick Austin Wells hyped up fans on social media this weekend.

On Sunday we got to see Gerrit Cole in action for the Yankees again, as he mowed down the lineup and made guys look silly. It’s finally comforting for New York fans to know they have a bonafide ace they can rely on every fifth day, since it feels like forever since that was a reality.

On the flip side, it has to be somewhat daunting to catch for the flamethrower, who blows hitters away with his upper-90s fastball and then catches them off guard with a wicked slider. Just ask Gary Sanchez. He’s had enough troubles behind the plate with hard-throwing pitchers (we’ve seen enough of that with Aroldis Chapman), and now he’s got Cole’s nasty stuff and perfectionist persona to deal with.

As for 2020 first-round draft pick Austin Wells, he doesn’t care about Cole’s nasty stuff and demanding demeanor. He’s ready to get behind the dish and catch the heat.

Wells signed with the Yanks two weeks ago and shaved for the occasion, so he couldn’t be more excited to join the organization. He was one of the first selections to put pen to paper with a team, but unfortunately isn’t in the team’s 60-man player pool.

That’s not gonna stop him from letting everyone know he wants to catch one of the best pitchers in the game. He sure knows how to get on the good side of Yankees fans. His words and actions since being taken No. 28 overall have already caught the attention of the fan base, which is notable when you consider he’s the second catcher the team took in the first round over the last three years.

The more the merrier!

And if things don’t work out at catcher, he’s ready to crush bombs from the left side of the plate.

His enthusiasm regardless of his role is admirable, but Cole better remember this kid when he finally cracks the bigs. Wells could be the ace’s next go-to catcher. You never know.
