The Houston Astros are struggling mightily with the COVID-19 protocol and safety measures.

If there was one team that would screw everything up for everyone, you know it’d be the Houston Astros. We already know they think they’re above it all, so it’s not at all surprising they keep having their summer practices interrupted because they’re incapable of doing anything right.

On top of being unable to follow the basic rules of baseball, the Astros have run into problem after problem with the COVID-19 protocol and safety measures. As a result, they were forced to cancel another workout this week.

Saturday’s practice is no more after a staff member was potentially exposed to someone infected with COVID-19 outside the organization.

This is hardly the beginning of their struggles on this front. The Astros have now canceled two workouts in the last six days and star slugger Alex Bregman missed Wednesday’s practice because his COVID-19 test results didn’t come back in time.

Though the Angels, Nationals, Athletics and Cardinals have also experienced similar issues in delayed test results, Houston is leading the way in ineptitude. Delayed test results are one thing, but for that to happen twice in a handful of days, and then have a staffer — not even a player! — possibly come into contact with another infected person is inexplicable.

Are the players and staffers not quarantining once they leave the ballpark? Sure, this could have been something as innocent as someone in this staffer’s apartment building testing positive for COVID-19, but this is now the third time something has happened in the last six days. It could be a coincidence or it could be poor oversight — we don’t know.

But with their opener 13 days away, these fragmented workouts won’t contribute to a promising start to the shortened 60-game season, and it’s clear no team can afford to stumble out of the gate given this year’s circumstances.

It’d be great to see the Astros falter and miss the playoffs, but they better not ruin the 2020 season for the rest of us because they can’t follow basic guidelines.
