Yankees Rumors: NYY Won’t Play in 2020 Field of Dreams Game
Rumor has it the New York Yankees won’t play in the 2020 Field of Dreams Game.
The New York Yankees will be giving fans almost everything they could ever want out of a 60-game season in 2020.
However, it looks like New York fans will be missing out on one little nugget that we’d been eagerly anticipating prior to the arrival of the pandemic.
In an effort to restrict travel, MLB is implementing a schedule that heavily relies on in-division games, and only features interleague matchups against teams that also fall inside your specified region. If the Yankees are going to make any out-of-the-ordinary treks, they’ll be to Atlanta, and not across the country on a West Coast swing.
No harm, no foul? Well, the Yankees were supposed to be participants in the hottest ticket game of 2020: the Field of Dreams Game in Dyersville, IA. Now that there’s no travel allowed from the East to the Midwest, it seems like they’ve been replaced.
Yes, Cardinals-White Sox is also a matchup steeped with tradition. And yes, it would’ve been very unfortunate for Yankee fans hoping for a chance to attend this special matchup to watch an entirely empty core of metal bleachers surrounding this special event.
That being said, it’s still a tough blow, and it’s bizarre that the game is still on the schedule at all — though this does solve the crowding issue. We’re not sure how more than 5,000 people were intended to attend this event in the first place. Zero almost makes more sense.
Whenever the doors open for Yankee fans in 2021 (or beyond), we’re sure the event will be better prepared for a massive onslaught of sweaty mid-August Bronx hooligans. This small, quaint farm in Iowa could definitely use the additional lead time.
What’s that saying? If you build it, they will…something?
