The George Floyd protests have engulfed America and a couple of former Yankees had something to say.
The national protests surrounding the death of George Floyd have prompted a ton of responses from high-profile athletes who are hoping to send the right message and further the discourse in an impactful way, especially given how difficult the current climate is. While the New York Yankees have yet to say anything on the matter, two of their former players do.
The Captain Derek Jeter as well as Alex Rodriguez have weighed in and had some strong words.
The Miami Marlins released a statement on behalf of Jeter and it’s quite long.
Jeter, who is half African-American, did not hold back and acknowledged that it’s incredibly important for people to come together and actively oppose racism in various ways instead of merely expressing their views or remaining silent on the matter. From a man of Jeter’s influence, these words go a long, long way.
As for A-Rod, he made his voice heard on Sunday afternoon when the protests were raging on. He expressed how sad he was in the wake of Floyd’s death and accompanied his tweet with a video urging people to acknowledge and confront racism.
Rodriguez, who is also a minority having grown up in Manhattan to immigrant parents, is using his platform to speak his mind and express his feelings on what’s been dominating the news cycle for nearly a week. A-Rod’s fiancee, Jennifer Lopez, was also outspoken in support of the peaceful protestors advocating against racism, which Rodriguez retweeted on his official account.
We’re not sure if the Yankees will release a statement in response to all of this, but two of the most influential players in the team’s modern history are providing a voice for the voiceless and using their power to spread positivity.
