This weekend MLB Pipeline released its list of the top 100 prospects in baseball heading into the 2020 season and there are three Yankees featured on the list.

The Yankees farm system isn’t as highly acclaimed as it was a couple of years ago, but it’s starting to trend upward again. 16-year-old outfielder Jasson Domiguez headlines the Baby Bombers featured in the top 100, coming in at #54. He’s followed by right-handers Clarke Schmidt at #88 and Deivi Garcia at #92.

After signing a record-breaking $5.1M deal with the Yankees last July Dominguez is quickly skyrocketing up all the pre-season prospect rankings and he hasn’t even played in his first professional game yet. Expectations are extremely high for the youngster from the Dominican Republic as he’s already earned comparisons to superstars like Mike Trout and Mickey Mantle.

Comparing him to those legends is probably unfair considering how young he is but it just goes to show how freakishly talented this kid is. Dominguez is a physical specimen at 5′ 10″, 190 lbs and with his ability to switch hit for power and run at an above-average speed many scouts are already projecting him to reach the big leagues before he turns 20 years old.

Clarke Schmidt leapfrogged Garcia as the top-ranked pitcher in the Yankees farm system and there’s a good chance we could see the former first rd pick make his big league debut in 2020. Schmidt’s pro career got off to slow start after the Yankees drafted him as a first-round pick back in 2017 a month after undergoing Tommy John. However, since he’s recovered from the injury he’s shown exactly why the Yankees took a chance on him with the 16th overall pick.

Schmidt made it Double-A Trenton in August of last season after making 13 appearances for A-Advanced Tampa. He thrived with the Thunder to finish off the season, posting a 2.37 ERA with 19 K’s in 19 innings pitched.

The 23-year-old already features three plus pitches (fastball, curveball, change-up) and projects as a middle of the rotation starter once he gets the call to the big leagues, but he has the potential to become more than that. It will be interesting to see where he starts off the season because there’s no doubt he’s coming on fast. If he can pick up where he left off towards the end of 2019 he could impact the Yankees pitching staff next summer.

The same could be said of 20-year-old Deivi Garcia who really burst onto the scene in 2019. Garcia started the year off very much under the radar in the Yankees system but he made it all the way to Triple-A after starting the season with the Tampa Tarpons.

His 16.8 K’s per 9 with Tampa and 14.6 with the Thunder were hard to ignore and by early July Garcia was promoted to Scranton. As the trade deadline neared Garcia had become untouchable in trade talks and by the end of the season he established himself as the top prospect in the organization.

Despite falling to third on MLB.com’s list heading into the 2020 season the future is still very bright for the young right-hander. A lot of eyes will be on Garcia this spring and if he makes a strong impression he could be in line for a big-league call-up if somebody in the starting rotation goes down with an injury.

However, first, he’ll likely have to show improvement at Triple-A first, but once he does that it’s only a matter of time before we see him in the Bronx making a big impact.
