Yankees place Luke Voit on 10-day IL with ab strain
With Luke Voit’s placement on the 10-day IL, his hopes of participating in the Home Run Derby have been dashed. However, due to the All-Star break, the Yankees slugger should miss a minimal amount of games.
Luke Voit sure did enjoy playing in London. Before injuring himself rounding first base on a double in the Yankees 17-13 victory over the Red Sox on Saturday, the 28-year-old first baseman had gone 4-for-4 with two runs scored, seven total bases, three doubles and an RBI in just five innings.
Although Voit was hopeful he would be able to suit up for the short series finale, the following day, the Yanks decided to be cautious. And with an off day on Monday, the club decided to place Voit on the 10-day IL, retroactive to June 30.
In a corresponding move, the Yanks recalled Mike Ford, who will likely backup Edwin Encarnacion, who will move from DH to first base. In Ford’s last seven games at Triple-A Scranton, he’s batting .333 with three home runs.

As for Voit, the hope is that he’ll be as ready as can be when the Blue Jays come into town on Friday, July 12. If not, getting him back the following Monday for the start of a four-game homestand versus the Rays would be advantageous.
Voit, who has a legitimate beef about not being named to the AL All-Star team (thanks, Alex Cora), is slashing .280/.393/.509 with 53 runs scored, 17 home runs and 50 RBIs in 290 at-bats.
Far exceeding his career-best numbers (set last season), Voit may have only smacked three long balls during June, but he was still an integral part of the Yankee offense, hitting .333/.442/.517 with 12 RBIs and 17 walks.
Overall, Voit’s 139+ OPS ranks him second among AL first baseman, behind only Carlos Santana of the Cleveland Indians.
