Retired nine-time All-Star, Carlos Beltrán, is reportedly joining the Bombers front office as a special advisor to Yankees general manager Brian Cashman.

Talk about exciting news! According to Mark Feinsand‏ of MLB.com, Carlos Beltrán is joining the Yankees front office as a special advisor to Yankees general manager, Brian Cashman. The interesting part is, Beltran was represented by Dan Lozano of MVP Sports Group, who also reps free agent Manny Machado.

As Feinsand questioned, will Cashman have Beltrán join the recruiting to bring four-time All-Star, Manny Machado to the Bronx?

Beltran retired following the 2017 season, after a 20-year playing career. A World Series winner with the Astros, Beltran put up potential Hall of Fame-worthy numbers: .279/.350/.486 with 435 HRs and 1587 RBIs. Beltran is extremely esteemed in the baseball industry and often took young players under his wing to mentor them.

Prior to the ’16 season, during Spring Training, Beltrán requested his locker be placed next to prospect Aaron Judge. He also helped Didi Gregorius get accustomed to big league life when he was first coming up. It was a challenging time for Sir Didi as he was taking over the shortstop position from Derek Jeter. his

The Yankees let go of manager Joe Girardi following the ‘17 season, even after he guided the team to the ALCS, falling one game shy of the World Series. Despite Beltran having never managed, let along coached a single day in his professional career, Beltran was on the shortlist for Yankee skipper. Prior to the club hiring Aaron Boone (who also lacked coaching experience), Brian Cashman had rave reviews for Beltran at the annual General Managers Meetings; per Erik Boland of Newsday.com:

"“I think we have a personal and professional relationship, so I know he has aspirations to manage,”“He had leadership qualities, no question about that. He was someone that people gravitated to in the clubhouse,” Cashman said. “I think managers or coaches or front offices could rely on him kind of directing things in a positive way or keeping the ship steered in the right direction from a players’ standpoint . . . He’s played the game a long time, he knows the game inside-out. He obviously has the respect of his peers, [is] bilingual, so he brings a lot to the table.”"

The Yankees offered Beltran a special advisor role in February 2018, but he rejected it as he wanted to take a hiatus from the game.

Beltran is an excellent addition to the Yankees front office. He will no doubt help the organization in many ways. As a player, Beltran often relied on analytics, especially during his final years with the Yanks, and clearly has significant experience mentoring up and coming major league talent.
