Almost a year ago, Bryce Harper’s agent Scott Boras wrote a cryptic letter to The Athletic. He intended to convince Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner to have an open mind.

Do the Yankees need to sign Bryce Harper this offseason? His agent sure hopes so. Superagent Scott Boras is known for negotiating significant deals for his star clients. Harper’s contract this offseason will be his top priority for sure.

One could think the 26-year-old superstar’s presence in the Bronx is necessary. With Didi Gregorius recovering from his recent Tommy John surgery for most of 2018, the Yankees lack a left-handed power bat. Unless Greg Bird turns it around, the Yanks haze zero players with 20-home run pop batting from the left side in their projected Opening Day lineup.

Last offseason, after New York landed the big fish from Miami, Giancarlo Stanton, Boras wrote a letter to The Athletic. His message was clear, though he claimed he had no particular players in mind when referring to who the Three Tenors would be:

"“A Bronx opera … The Three Tenors … Hal’s genius, vision,” Boras wrote in an email to The Athletic. “Alone the three were stars … now a galaxy of international popularity.”"

For those of you that don’t know, The Three Tenors were a well-known operatic singing group in the 90’s and early 2000’s.

The New York Post asked if Boras envisioned Stanton, Harper, and Aaron Judge being baseball’s version of the Three Tenors. The sports agent response: “I didn’t say specific players … just that Hal has a love for [the] arts and I’m am sure he would love the Three Tenors.”

As of now, the Yanks have the money to afford a mega Harper deal. Also, Hal Steinbrenner insinuated after elimination from the playoffs that his team will be big spenders this offseason. Are there signs that point towards Harper signing with New York.

Some may remember Harper playing centerfield and shaving coincidentally when playing against the Yanks earlier in the season. Was he trying to impress the Yankee brass? Maybe, or he could have been toying with the Bronx Bombers.

If you expect the Yankees to pass on making an offer for Harper this offseason, you’re crazy. While starting pitching will be the top priority, do not be surprised if Boras negotiates a deal for Harper to land in the Bronx. And if Bryce does sign, then the stars will align in the Yankees outfield.
