SI’s “14 Back” recounts the craziness that was the 1978 Yankees-Red Sox season

Sports Illustrated’s new documentary “14 Back” is coming just in time for the 40th anniversary of the insane 1978 pennant race between the Yanks and Sox.

For New York Yankees fans, the 1978 pennant race is a thing of beauty. Not only did the Yanks battle back from a 14-game deficit, but they crushed the dreams of the Boston Red Sox on game 163 of the season.

It’s a sweet thing. A sweet, sweet thing.

Which is exactly why you’re going to want to check out Sports Illustrated’s new film, “14 Back.” It will transport you back to 1978 – through all the turmoil, all the wins, and the swing of one Bucky Dent.

The new 90-minute film, which is produced by 11-time Emmy winner Jonathan Hock, takes us back to 1978 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the craziest pennant race in MLB history.

It released today (September 20) on SI TV. So head on over there to check it out.

Really, it’s a great time. It’s worth the time just to listen to Graig Nettles and Ron Guidry shoot from the hip about their manager, Billy Martin, Yankees owner George Steinbrenner and, of course, the hated Boston Red Sox.

That’s actually the most appealing thing about “14 Back.” It doesn’t pull any punches. You can tell that these guys really hated each other back in the day – and some of those feelings clearly have lingered on despite the passage of nearly a half-century.

I don’t want to spoil anything, but there’s a bit about a certain item Bill Lee keeps in his wallet that you’re going to want to see.

So don’t wait. The Yankees might not have caught the Red Sox this season, but that’s just all the more reason to celebrate 1978. Head on over to SI.tv now to check it out.
