Yankees GM Weighs In On Chris Sale Trade

Hours after the White Sox sent Chris Sale to the Red Sox for a package of highly touted Minor League prospects, Yankees GM Brian Cashman shared his own opinion on the deal.

Yankees fans worldwide, still reeling from their division rival Red Sox acquiring one of baseball’s most complete starting pitchers in Chris Sale, likely weren’t comforted by Brian Cashman’s assessment of MLB’s newest super team.

While speaking with reporters on Tuesday at baseball’s annual rumor mill generator (the Winter Meetings) Cashman was quoted as saying, “That was a big one, that’s a blockbuster, that’s a wow,” the Yankees general manager said of the trade that sent top prospects Yoan Moncada and Michael Kopech and two other minor leaguers to the Pale Hose. “Obviously they got a lot and gave up a lot. Boston is like the Golden State Warriors now of baseball. They got their [Kevin] Durant, their [Draymond] Green, [Klay] Thompson and [Steph] Curry. It was a big one.”

If that’s the case, then what’s the NBA team equivalent of the Yankees? The Trail Blazers? Lakers? Knicks?!

Unlike the Knicks, though, who spent a whole heck of a lot of money via free agency this past offseason, the Yankees aren’t expected to pursue many more players outside of a closer.

While Cashman confirmed that his organization did indeed make contractual offers to both Aroldis Chapman and Kenley Jansen, he would not get into specifics — though many have speculated that the Yankees’ offer to their former closer Chapman, was for five years — which if true, would be one year less than what Chapman told ESPN’s Marly Rivera, he would like.

In response to the many critics who took to Twitter, chastising him for only making one free agent signing to this point (Matt Holliday) while Boston willingly parted with two of their top five overall prospects, Cashman replied, “It is not a deal that we should be doing at this moment in time, but we’re going to get to the point where that is a deal that we will be in play on. But it is a timing thing.”

For all the memes that ran rampant on Tuesday afternoon, stating that late owner George Steinbrenner would have never let this happen, Cashman freely offered up the Yankees’ new philosophy on constructing a winning team.

“I don’t think we react,” Cashman said. “I don’t think we are emotional. We have a game plan that we’re going to continue and stay diligent and determined with and I think it will serve us well over time.”
