Carlos Beltran Takes a Parting Shot at the Yankees
Carlos Beltran’s transition to playing in Texas has gone pretty seamlessly. Yet for some reason, he decided to let it be known that playing in New York isn’t all champagne wishes and caviar dreams.
It’s pretty amazing to me that after just two successful weeks in Arlington, Texas, Carlos Beltran has already ruled that Texas ‘is more about baseball’ than New York ever was. If I could ask Beltran one question, it would most certainly be–well why did you spend 10 of your 19 professional seasons in such a demanding market then?
Could it have been because during those ten years while playing in New York, you made over 152 million? But over the past two week’s you’ve hit .315/.351/.500 with two home runs, so the grass is most certainly greener, correct?
Beltran went on The Afternoon Show with Cowlishaw and Mosley on KESN-FM 103.3 ESPN Radio to compliment his new digs while throwing shade on his former employer, the Yankees.
Well, you know what? Playing in Texas… it’s relaxing, man. Being here, for me, I feel so weird because playing in New York, you know, every day I feel like I talk to the media before the games, after the games, and there were like 30-40 guys in the clubhouse every single day. And here, there’s maybe four or five, and sometimes they don’t even want to talk to you.So, for me, it’s kind of weird, but they’re two different markets – even though this team is a big-market team. But at the end of the day, [in] New York there’s a lot of distractions, a lot of things going on more than baseball. Here it’s more about baseball. [Jeff] Banister is more laid-back. I think Joe Girardi has a lot of things going on in New York.
Two things–in my estimation, the Yankees did Beltran a favor, trading him to a team that is running away with their division (7.5 games over the second-place Seattle Mariners), which will likely result in Beltran getting another opportunity to shine on the Postseason stage; potentially earning himself one final payday before the curtain closes on his career.
And second, why are you even bringing up Joe Girardi’s name? Go ahead, rant and rave all you want about Jeff Bannister, Texas BBQ, or even the Dallas Cowboys for all us Yankees fans care; but why mention that your ex-manager has a lot going on back in the Bronx? What, like we didn’t know that the whole Alex Rodriguez fiasco put the 51-year-old Girardi through hell and back! To quote the philosopher Birdman, “put some RESPEK on my name.”
So enjoy your time in the Lone Star state, just like you did back in 2004 for 90 games as a member of the Houston Astros. Because the money machine known to you as New York, has officially run dry for your services.
