New York Yankees Recap: Beltran’s 400th Home Run, Headley’s Double Lead Yankees to Victory
Carlos Beltran hit his 400th career home run and Chase Headley laced a go-ahead, pinch-hit double to help guide the New York Yankees (16-20) to a 7-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox (24-14) at Yankee Stadium Sunday.
Beltran’s historic two-run blast came off White Sox reliever Zach Duke with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The long ball put the Yankees ahead 5-4.
The 39-year-old Beltran became just the fourth switch-hitter in Major League Baseball history to reach the 400 home run plateau. He is also the 54th player in MLB history to hit 400 career home runs.
After an RBI double by Melky Cabrera tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the seventh inning against Dellin Betances, Headley came off the bench to deliver a two-out, pinch-hit double in the bottom half of the inning to put the Yankees ahead 6-5.
Andrew Miller worked a one-two-three eighth inning and Aroldis Chapman shut the door on the White Sox in the ninth inning to earn his third save of the season.
Brian McCann added a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth inning to solidify the 7-5 win for the Yankees.
Despite giving up the lead in the seventh inning, Betances earned his first victory of the season. The 28-year-old is now 1-2 on the year.
Chicago’s Matt Albers suffered his second loss this season after surrendering the double to Headley. Albers’ record now stands at 1-2.
Starlin Castro and Dustin Ackley each added an RBI for the Yankees in the victory.
Masahiro Tanaka lasted just five innings Sunday, giving up four runs on eight hits and walking three. He received his seventh no-decision thus far this season.
Avisail Garcia had three hits and Adam Eaton added a home run and two RBIs in the loss for the White Sox.
The Bronx Bombers finished their 10-game homestand 7-3 and have now won three straight series.
The Yankees will head west to Arizona to begin a three-game interleague set against the Diamondbacks Monday at Chase Field. Michael Pineda (1-4, 6.28 ERA) will be on the mound for the Yankees against Robbie Ray (1-2, 4. 84 ERA) for Arizona at 9:40 p.m.
