Yankees Reliever Nick Rumbelow To Undergo Tommy John Surgery

The New York Yankees minor league pitching depth became a bit more depleted.

On Monday evening 24-year old right-handed reliever Nick Rumbelow was placed on the Triple-A disabled list and will require season-ending Tommy John surgery.

Rumblow departed from Sunday’s RailRiders game in the fifth inning after feeling discomfort in his pitching arm.

This is a tough blow to the young right-hander. Despite making 17 major league bullpen appearances in 2015 as part of the Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre revolving door of relievers, the Yankees were currently in the process of stretching Rumbelow out as a starting pitcher.

In his place, the RailRiders recalled 28-year old right-hander Conor Mullee from the AA Trenton Thunder and slid 25-year old Tyler Cloyd into their starting rotation for the time being, but the loss of Rumbelow for the long-term opens up a spot on the Scranton Shuttle for another minor league pitcher to trek between the minor leagues and the Bronx to appear out of the Yankees bullpen in 2016 for a brief cup of coffee, or two, or three…

Rumbelow’s injury adds to the laundry list of pitching injuries for the New York Yankees, including Andrew Miller and his fractured wrist and Bryan Mitchell and his turf toe.
