Get ready for the controversial retirement tour.

New York Yankees designated hitter Alex Rodriguez told Andrew Marchand of ESPN.com that he will retire following the 2017 season when his current contract with the New York Yankees expires.

A-Rod, who will turn 41 in the middle of the upcoming baseball season is certainly one of the most controversial figures in the world of sports.

After sitting out an entire season due to ties with The Biogenesis Report, the 20-year veteran turned back the clock and posted one of the best comeback performances in recent history, tallying 33 homers and 86 RBI during the 2015 season.

So far in his career, the MLB veteran has tallied 687 home runs (27 behind Babe Ruth for third all-time), 3,070 hits (21st all-time) and 2,055 RBIs (fourth all-time).

But perhaps the most interesting part about this whole ordeal is that Alex Rodriguez will be eligible for the MLB Hall of Fame in 2023, which will trigger the most intense argument across baseball as to whether or not he deserves to be enshrined in Cooperstown.

Yes he was suspended for a full-season, and yes he’s been under a microscope since he signed the richest contract in baseball history back in 2000, but make no mistake about it, Alex Rodriguez is undoubtedly one of the best players of his generation, and when all is said and done he will end his career with 23 major league seasons under his belt.

Look, I don’t mean to kick- start this argument – 2023 is seven years down the line, so for now, let’s just enjoy the last two-season of Alex Rodriguez’ career.
