New York Yankees Recap: Yankees Down Mets 6-3
While a majority of the focus around baseball today was centered on the historic matchup overseas between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Cuban National Team, there was still plenty of spring training baseball going on at home.
At George M. Steinbrenner Field, the New York Yankees cruised to their third straight victory after downing the cross-town rival New York Mets 6-3.
The Yankees sent 22-year old phenom Luis Severino to the hill to take on 24-year old southpaw and Long Island native Steven Matz. Severino struck out five while walking one and scattering two runs on five hits over 4.1 innings in what turned out to be his third spring training start and fifth pre-season appearance.
Severino was backed by a strong offensive display, including a five-run second inning thanks to a pair of RBI singles from Didi Gregorius and Brett Gardner, a two-RBI single off the bat of Alex Rodriguez, and a sac-fly off the bat of veteran Carlos Beltran.
Arodlis Chapman continued to struggle this spring, serving up two RBI’s in the top of the fifth off an RBI groundout to Neil Walker and a ground-rule double off the bat of Yoenis Cespedes. Chapman now has a 4.15 ERA in 4.1 innings pitched so far this spring.
Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller on the other hand looked sharp, each pitching one inning and striking out a pair of New York Mets hitters each.
Today marked the second and final meeting this spring between the Subway Series clubs, who settled on a 4-4 tie two weeks ago in Port St. Lucie. Both clubs will meet in a four-game home-and-home series in early August when the games actually count.
On Wednesday the Yankees will pay the Washington Nationals a visit and travel to Space Coast Stadium in Viera, Florida. Masahiro Tanaka will make his fourth spring training start with Brett Gardner scheduled to play in back-to-back games for the first time this spring.
