New York Yankees Prospect Profile: Number 30 Trey Amburgey

Throughout spring training our staff here at Yanks Go Yard will profile the top 30 prospects in the New York Yankees system according to MLB Pipeline.

Up first is 30th-ranked prospect Trey Amburgey, who was selected in the 13th round (393rd overall) of the 2015 MLB June Amateur Draft out of St. Petersburg Junior College in Florida.

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 50 | Run: 65 | Arm: 45 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45

At St. Petersburg Junior College, Amburgey slashed an impressive .304/.351/.385 with one home run, 22 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 174 plate-appearances.

After signing with the Yankees for $100,000, the 21-year old outfielder put up video game numbers by slashing .346/.399/.523 with 22 extra-base hits and 21 stolen bases in 58 minor league games – 21 of which were played in Staten Island and 37 of which were played with the Gulf Coast Yankees.

Standing in at 6’2″ and weighing in at 210 pounds, Amburgey played center field for most of his time in college, but the Yankees quickly converted him to a corner outfielder in rookie ball.

Per MLB pipeline, the right-hander makes consistent contact and posses’ above-average speed on the base path and in the field. His one flaw is a weak arm, so unless he can fix that by getting stronger, it looks like the Yankees will try to develop him into a corner-outfielder.

Trey Amburgey looks to be quite the surprise for the Yankees so far, but before he can be considered a diamond in the rough, he needs to develop his power and increase his numbers against right-handed pitchers. In Staten Island he batted an insane .643 off southpaw’s compared to hitting just .216 off righties. With the Gulf Coast Yankees, he hit .333 against both left-handed and right-handed pitching, but he struck out a total of 16 times off righties compared to just four times off lefties.

Next: Yankees Will Select 18th Overall in 2016 MLB Draft

My guess is Trey Amburgey starts the season in Single-A with the Charleston RiverDogs.
