Starlin Castro In the Dimensions of Yankee Stadium

With Spring Training just around the corner, New York Yankees fans will finally get a look at their new long-term second baseman Starlin Castro

Today on Yanks Go Yard we take a look at Starlin Castro’s offensive statistics to see how they stack up against the dimensions of Yankee Stadium and the rest of the second basemen in the American League.

For starters, the biggest statistic that jumps off the paper is his home run rates. Since the 2010 season, the 26-year old Castro has crushed a total of 62 home runs, which would rank him sixth of all American League second baseman.Yes Castro spent a majority of his time at shortstop all those years in Chicago before the Addison Russell era began, but the numbers still remain to be true.

According to the ESPN Home Run Tracker, of the 62 Starlin Castro home runs, 55 of them would have left the field at Yankee Stadium. In 2015 alone, all 11 of his home runs had an average distance of 409.5  feet, which is deeper than the furthest fence (408 ft) in Yankee Stadium.

His career .404 slugging percentage (SLG) and career .321 on base percentage (OBP) would easily have ranked him in the top ten second baseman in the American League from 2010-15 as well, behind the likes of Robinson Cano, Jason Kipnis and Dustin Pedroia – which is some pretty good company of you ask me.

Next is his career 19.9% line drive rate, which according to Fangraphs would be fifth best among qualified American League baseman since 2010. Stephen Drew had just a 15.4% line drive rate in 2015 and the Yankee haven’t have a second baseman with a higher line drive rate than Starlin Castro over a full season since of course the days of Robinson Cano pre 2014.

Another interesting stat I found on Starlin Castro is his impressive career 3.16 weighted on base average (wOBA), which would rank him ninth in the American League amongst second baseman from 2010-2015.

If Castro can continue to get on base at these rates and the core of Brian McCann, Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez do their job driving in runs, than the Yankees offense has the potential to be potent in 2016.
