The Yankees know Didi Gregorius has a bright future, and now MLB Network has confirmed it. As part of its Top 10 series by position, Gregorius is on the list and rising.
For the record, the list at shortstop is as follows according to NJ.com:
1,Francisco Lindor, Cleveland Indians
2. Troy Tulowitzki, Toronto Blue Jays
3. Carlos Correa, Houston Astros
4. Brandon Crawford, San Francisco Giants
5. Jhonny Peralta, St. Louis Cardinals
6. Xander Bogaerts, Boston Red Sox
7. Addison Russell, Chicago Cubs
8. Marcus Semien, Oakland Athletics
9. Andrelton Simmons, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
10. Didi Gregorius, New York Yankees
His attitude upon coming to the Yankees revealed a glimpse of what was to come. He wasn´t looking to replace Derek Jeter, just to be himself.
"“Jeter is the greatest,” Gregorius told The NY Post. “I didn’t start playing shortstop until I was 17 and now this. I’m still learning how to play shortstop, that’s how I look at it,’’ Gregorius said. “I love it. I just try to get outs, make the routine play and once in a while make a highlight play. Here I was sitting at home, the trade happened, I had heard rumors, but I was surprised — especially going to New York, after Jeter, and after everything he did. So it’s kind of amazing.” [related category]"
And now that the Yankees have stability at second base with the acquisition of Starlin Castro, things should only get better for Gegorius. From late July to early September of 2015, Gregorius had a 40-game span in which he batted .345. All the while he dazzled with the glove. Add in the report from Yes Network that the Yankees and Gregorius have avoided arbitration with an agreement on a a $2.4 Million deal, and he goes into the 2016 season with stability both on and off the field.
So with spring training right around the corner, the Yankees start the season with stability in the middle of the infield for the first time since the days of Jeter and Robinson Cano. The only question is, just how far can Gregorius move up the list this year?
