New York Yankees Acquire Ronald Torreyes and Tyler Olson from Dodgers

Tuesday evening the New York Yankees announced that they have acquired infield utility man Ronald Torreyes and southpaw pitcher Tyler Olson from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for minor leaguer Rob Segedin and a combination of either cash considerations or a player to be named later.

Both the 26-year old Tyler Olson and the 23-year old Ronald Torreyes were both designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Dodgers before being traded to the Yankees, and now Brian Cashman has filled his 40-man roster within a matter of days.

Torreyes, a native of Venezuela played a total of eight games as a September call up for the Dodgers last season, notching two hits in six at bats with one RBI and one run scored. Prior to that he was a suitcase in 2015, playing at both the Double-A and Triple A levels for the Tulsa Drillers (LAD), New Hampshire Fisher Cats (TOR), Fresno Grizzlies (HOU) and Oklahoma City Dodgers (LAD). When all was said and done, Torreyes slashed .261/.308/.347 with a .655 OPS in 453 minor league plate appearances.

On the defensive side of the diamond, Torreyes is extremely versatile. While has made a majority of his starts at second base, he has also seen his fair share of work at shortstop (144 games), third base (65 games) and corner outfield.

While his offensive numbers don’t necessarily jump off the page, Torreyes is still a lifetime .287/.330/.358 hitter at Triple-A, so he does hit for average. Combine this with his defensive versatility and many would argue that Torreyes is an intriguing depth addition for the New York Yankees.

The southpaw Tyler Olson made his major league debut out of the Seattle Mariners bullpen last season, tossing 13.1 ugly innings, as he gave up a total of eight runs on 18 hits and 1o walks. Interestingly enough, seven of those 10 walks were intentional, so he almost always had to pitch from the stretch.

Down in Triple-A Olson’s numbers were a bit more encouraging. In 54.1 innings pitched for the Tacoma Rainers, Olson pitched to a 4.47 ERA with an impressive 8.8 K/9 to his 2.8 BB/9. It’ll be interesting to see whether or not the Yankees add Olson to their major league bullpen, where he’ll likely serve as a lefty specialist.

As far as what the Yankees gave up, the 27-year old Rob Segedin split the 2015 season between Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton as a corner-infielder and outfielder, hitting a combined .287/.360/.426 with seven home runs, 12 doubles and 34 RBI in 284 plate appearances. Though he was always considered a long shot to make the Yankees every-day major league roster, the New Jersey native showed flashes of potential. After all, he is a career .272/.350/.408 hitter with a .757 OPS in six years of minor league ball – all with the New York Yankees.
