New York Yankees News: Top Prospect Jorge Mateo Names FSL Player of the Week
New York Yankees minor leaguers continue to impress, as top shortstop prospect Jorge Mateo was named the Florida State League Player of the Week from August 10-16th.
In five games started this week for the Tampa Yankees, Mateo went 10-for-23 (.435) with four extra base-hits, three of which were doubles and the other a triple. Mateo also recorded four runs scored, four RBI and three stolen bases.
Mateo, who was signed as an international free-agent in 2010 out of the Dominican Republic, is currently in his second year of minor league ball with the New York Yankees.
To date, Mateo is slashing a combined .283/.349/.403 with 37 RBI and 77 stolen bases in 108 games split between the Charleston RiverDogs and Tampa Yankees in 2015.
Mateo made headlines during the trade deadline when Brian Cashman named him ‘untouchable’ along with top prospects Luis Severino, Gregory Bird and Aaron Judge. It’s even been reported that Brian Cashman turned down a deal for top reliever Craig Kimbrel that would have sent Jorge Mateo over to the San Diego Padres.
This is second straight week in which the Tampa Yankees had one of their players named the Florida State League Player of the Week, as Mike Ford was awarded the honors last week.
