In days leading up to the MLB Trade Deadline, Brian Cashman was adamant that he wouldn’t trade top prospects Luis Severino, Aaron Judge, Gregory Bird or Jorge Mateo.
However, it now seems as if things have changed a bit.
According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Brian Cashman would now consider dealing Jorge Mateo:
A few days back, the Yankees declined a trade with the Padres that would send Jorge Mateo over to San Diego in exchange for Craig Kimbrel. As Joel Sherman indicates, perhaps now that Mateo is back in discussions, the Yankees are trying to acquire starting pitching from the Padres in addition to closer Craig Kimbrel.
James Shields, Tyson Ross and Ian Kennedy are very much available, as GM A.J. Preller is looking to shed salary for the Padres.
In four seasons within the Yankees farm system, the 20-year old Jorge Mateo has slashed .278/.360/.408 with a .769 OPS. This year with the Charleston RiverDogs (Single-A), Mateo is batting .275 with 16 doubles, eight triples, and 70, yes 70, stolen bases.
Having Jorge Mateo on the block might be an act of desperation from Brian Cashman, but he will surely increase any return the Yankees score before the MLB Trade Deadline ends at 4:00 PM EST today.
