New York Yankees Game Recap: A-Rod, John Ryan Murphy Lead Unforgettable Yankees Comeback Win

In spectacular fashion, the New York Yankees came from behind to defeat the Minnesota Twins 8-5 on Saturday night. Alex Rodriguez hit three home runs, and John Ryan Murphy added a big three-run blow.

The Twins grabbed the lead quickly against CC Sabathia in the bottom of the first inning. After a single by Brian Dozier, Aaron Hicks belted his fourth home run of the season to put Minnesota up 2-0.

Sabathia faced adversity again in the second. A tailor made double play ball was spoiled when Stephen Drew dropped the feed from Brendan Ryan as he tried to pivot and throw to first base. The double play would have ended the inning. Undaunted, Sabathia bounced back to retire the next two batters to end the threat. [related category]

But CC did not fare as well in the third. Torii Hunter hit a three-run home run, his 16th on the year, to put the Yankees in a 5-0 hole. The blast pushed Hunter passed Kirby Puckett on the Twins all-time home run list.

Meanwhile, the Yankees had not yet registered a hit against Twins´ starting pitcher Tommy Milone. Milone was sailing along on off-speed pitches. But the breeze halted when Alex Rodriguez batted in the fourth. Rodriguez creamed his 21st home run to end the no hitter and get the Yankees to within 5-1.

Sabathia persevered into the sixth.

Minnesota loaded the bases without the benefit of a hit. A walk, a hit-batsman and another walk resulted in Manager Joe Girardi bringing in Adam Warren. Warren struck out Hicks to Get Sabathia off the hook. Warren would allow just one hit in 2.1 innings.

And Warren´s success seemed to wake up the Yankees offense. After Chris Young doubled in the seventh, A-Rod smashed his second home run of the game, his 22nd of the season, to close the deficit to 5-3.
Mark Teixeira kept it going with a double. A flyout by Carlos Beltran moved Teixeira to third. Chase Headley followed with another sacrifice fly, and Girardi looked up at the scoreboard to find the Yankees down by just one run.

As the game moved to the ninth, all eyes were on Rodriguez to see if he could hit his third homer of the game and tie the score. Alex ended the debate as to whether he should have been an all star selection, by drilling another round tripper.

But the Yankees were not done yet. With runners on first and third, John Ryan Murphy came up with A-Rod´s heroics fresh in his mind. Murphy then got in on the fun by adding heroics of his own with a three run home run. Not only had the Yankees come all the way back from a 5-0 deficit, but they had opened up an 8-5 lead! The Yankees bench erupted like Fourth of July fireworks.

Andrew Miller closed it out for his 23rd save and THEEEEEE YANKEES WIN!
