New York Yankees Recap: Yankees Break out the Broom Sticks and Sweep the O’s

Today the New York Yankees took a giant step forward in their race towards first place in the A.L East by successfully completing a three-game sweep over the division rival Baltimore Orioles.

The Bombers got on the board early, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first thanks to a bases clearing double by Chase Headley that plated Jacoby Ellsbury, Brett Gardner and Alex Rodriguez and an RBI single by Sir Didi Gregorius  that plated Headley.

The Orioles answered back one frame later with a solo home run off the batt of Chris Davis, but it was all New York Yankees today.

In the bottom half of the second Jacoby Ellsbury hit a solo home run, his third of the season, extending the Yankees lead to 5-1.

One inning later, everyones favorite Yankee Stephen Drew doubled in another run and Jacoby Ellsbury hit a sacrifice fly that plated John Ryan Murphy, making it 7-1 Yankees.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ellsbury continued his success against Bud Norris, smashing a double to the left-field wall that plated Murphy and Headley, extending the Yankees lead to 9-1. Ellsbury finished the day with four RBIs and a triple shy of completing the cycle.

The Orioles squeaked across two more runs in the top of the eighth with solo home runs from J.J. Hardy and Manny Machado, making it 9-3 Yankees. But other than that, Masahiro Tanaka was dominant from the hill all day. Tanaka finished the day with 7.2 innings of three run baseball, scattering four hits while striking out seven Baltimore hitters. Tanaka improved his record to 7-3 and is looking great as we near the later months of the 2015 season.

Southpaw veteran Chris Capuano came on in relief of Tanaka, pitching 1.0 inning of no-hit baseball, including a big strikeout over Chris Davis.

Branden Pinder came on in relief to get the last out of the ball game, and the Yankees improved their record to 53-41, extending to 12 games over .500 and 6.0 games over the second place Toronto Blue Jays (pending the rest of today’s play.)

The Yankees are back in action tomorrow night at 8:10pm EST in Minnesota, where Michael Pineda (9-6, 3.77 ERA) will face-off against former Yankees pitcher Phil Hughes (8-6, 4.15 ERA). It’ll be the first game of a 10-game road trip against the Twins, Texas Rangers and Chicago White Sox. Maybe the Yankees will bring home Jose Quintana or Jeff Samardzija with them?

Anyway, the Yankees are playing as good a baseball as they have all year, and their timing is impeccable. The Yankees are 9-1 in their last 10 games and on cruise control during the dog days of summer! They must continue this success on the road!

All eyes are shifting over to the Bay Area where the second place Toronto Blue Jays are playing the Oakland Athletics in a 3:55 pm EST start. Let’s go A’s!
