New York Yankees News: Draft Signings Through 6/17

As the calendar turns to June 17th, we are officially one month away from the draft signing deadline on Friday July 17th at 5:00pm. Here’s a list of the Yankees draftees who have already turned pro;

Kyle Holder, SS, University of San Diego – First Round, 30th Overall

According to MLB.com draft insider Jonathan Mayothe Yankees have officially signed their number 30 overall pick, which they received as compensation for David Robertson and his decision to sign with the Chicago White Sox in the offseason.

While Holder is best known for his glove, his offense is what concerns many scouts. He bats left-handed and slashed .348/.418/.482 with 4 HRs and 31 RBI this year in the always tough West Coast Baseball Conference, so he does show some signs of life at the the plate.

With the reported $1.8 MM signing bonus, it appears the Yankees saved about $114,900 against the allocated bonus money for your average 30th overall pick.

Drew Finley, RHP, Rancho Bernado High School, California – Third Round, 92nd Overall

Jonathan Mayo reported that the Yankees will sign Drew Finley to an above-slot $950,000 signing bonus, which is $323,400 above the allocated bonus pool slot.

The Yankees are very high on Finley, as many scouts reported that the high school right-hander combines the projection and control to be a future major league starting pitcher.

Jeff Hendrix , CF, Oregon State University – Fourth Round, 123rd Overall

The Yankees signed center-fielder Jeff Hendrix to full-pick value, which is a $456,800 signing bonus. With a log jam of centerfield prospects already in the Yankees organization, it’ll be interesting to see if the Yankees continue to develop him as an every day center-fielder. Time will tell.

Jhalan Jackson, OF, Florida Southern University – Seventh Round, 213th Overall

According to MLB.com’s Draft Signing and Bonus Tracker, the Yankees have also signed seventh round pick Jhalan Jackson to a $100,000 signing bonus. Jackson was only a junior at Florida Southern, so the Yankees probably caved in a little more to get him to sign,  but still saved a total of $92,000 in the process.

Ryan Krill, 1B, Michigan State – Ninth Round, 273rd Overall

Again, according to the MLB.com Draft signing and Bonus Tracker cited above, the Yankees signed 1B draftee Ryan Krill to a $5,000 signing bonus. A sum that is way cheaper than the $159,000 slot value for a ninth rounder, saving the Yankees exactly $154,000. Krill is in his senior year at Michigan State, and being that he was drafted super late in this years draft, he had little to no negotiating leverage, which is probably why he signed for so little.

All in all, the Yankees still have a number of drafted players still unsigned, which leaves plenty of work for Cashman over the next month or so as we slowly approach the deadline.

Perhaps most notable, is RHP James Kaprielian, the Yankees highest draft selection at 16th overall, who is in fact a client of Scott Boras, which makes it very likely that his signing bonus might trump the slot bonus of $2,543,300 by a long haul. It’s also likely that he won’t sign until deadline day.

Stay tuned for more information on the Yankees draft signing as we move forward!
