New York Yankees Editorial: Figuring Out The Roster Turnover

I guess the Yankees may have known ahead of time that Andrew Miller was going to be going on the DL after the game yesterday. The Yankees activated Brendan Ryan off the DL and optioned outfielder Ramon Flores down to AAA. Flores was coming off a three hit night against Max Scherzer.

The 23 year old is hitting .269 over his first 26 at-bats and has shown he certainly has some defensive ability. So that left Chris Young and Garrett Jones to man left field.

That also left Jose Pirela, Ryan, Stephen Drew and Didi Gregorius up the middle. That’s a little excessive.

When you option a player down to the minors, they have to stay down in the minors for a minimum of 10 days, unless you have a player you placed on the DL.

So since Miller was placed on the DL, Flores can take his spot. Another reason to think that is this:

So the Yankees need a pitcher and preferably a right-hander. Who could that be?

Martin was a part of the bullpen for 15 games, going 0-1 with a 3,55 ERA in 15 games. Martin got hurt and when activated off the DL was sent down to AAA, where he’s appeared in four games with a 4.50 ERA giving up two hits in four innings with four strikeouts.

The one name that should not be mentioned? Luis Severino.

The Yankees don’t exactly have the best record developing starting pitchers by having them in the bullpen first (see Joba Chamberlain). Severino picked up his first win as a starter in AAA yesterday. If he’s the future of the rotation leave him be.

The Yankees roster is worse than it was on Tuesday night. Part of that is injury. Part of that is talent. I’d rather have Pirela than Ryan on the team, Ryan’s performance yesterday not withstanding.
