New York Yankees Rumors: Second Base Upgrade?

facebooktwitterreddit

Yeah, I realize Stephen Drew hit two homers last night. Sure maybe its a turn of the corner or maybe it’s a blip on the radar. Who knows. Apparently the New York Yankees don’t want to call up Rob Refsnyder because of his defense, even though his bat is ready, so the Yankees may do some shopping according to CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman.

"The Yankees are interested in Ben Zobrist, which should surprise no one considering their second-base issues. They are surprised that Jose Pirela hasn’t performed since his promotion, and Stephen Drew’s batting average remains oddly low again. Yankees people think Rob Refnsyder can hit at the big-league level now, but his defense remains a little rough. Of course, as an A’s person said, “There will be many teams interested in Zobrist.” … The Yankees also continue to like Dustin Ackley, despite his recent struggles"

I’m not sure the organization realizes that Pirela can’t perform if he only plays once a week. You can’t get any consistency if you don’t play.

Targeting Zobrist makes sense. He’s versatile and quite good. If the A’s fall out of it, with Zobrist being a free agent after the year, it makes sense for them to shop him. The thing is Zobrist is going to be coveted by every single contender which is going to make it quite hard to get him unless the Yankees want to include certain prospects they shouldn’t.

Ackley is interesting. He was the second pick in the draft behind Stephen Strasburg. He’s just 27 and it may be that he needs to get out of Seattle in order to reach his potential.

So it seems like the Yankees will be looking for a bat and a couple of arms. Should be an interesting trade season for them.
