Yankee Recap: Yankees Fall to Oakland A’s Ace 6-2

This West Coast trip has not gotten off to a great a start as the New York Yankees lost to the Oakland A’s 6-2. This game was an uphill battle from the start as the Yankees sent journeyman Chris Capuano to the mound, while the A’s sent potential Cy Young contender Sonny Gray.

Chris Capuano gave a gritty effort as he is fighting for his job to stay in the rotation. He gave up four runs with three being earned. All of the runs he gave up were in the fourth inning. Before any of the runs were scored the Yankees could have gotten out of the inning without that much damage, but a terrible error by Chase Headley left the door wide open for the A’s to gain a big lead. If Headley makes that play most likely only one run scores that inning, a last that did not happen and the A’s scored four runs.

Many people (especially the East Coast) do not know who Sonny Gray is, but he is one of the best pitchers in the game, and looked it against the Yankees. Even though Gray gave up two runs, he was in complete control of the game. Gray went eight solid innings giving up only two runs and only four hits. Sonny Gray still leads the league in ERA with a 1.82.

Brian McCann was able to keep his power streak going, as he hit another home run against the A’s. McCann now has hit a home run in four straight games, and has had an RBI in seven straight games. It has been great to see McCann become more comfortable at the plate, and be a run producer in that middle of the order.

Chase Headley really had a bad game tonight. He gave up a crucial error in the fourth inning that started the rally for the A’s. Then at the plate he went 0-4 striking out twice, and living three men on base. In the eighth inning he could have redeem himself, but failed by grounding out to end the Yankee threat.

Then in the bottom of the eighth Brett Lawrie gave the A’s some breathing room hitting his fourth home run of the year, and made the final score 6-2.

The Yankees will attempt to win a game on the West Coast as they played the third game of the four game series with the A’s. It is another late start, first pitch will be at 10:05
