Joel Sherman of the New York Post put it plain and simple:
"“The best player on the Yankees is currently the AL East.”"
Following last nights blowout loss at the hands of the Texas Rangers, the Yankees became losers of five straight and nine of their last ten games, yet the Yankees still remain in the hunt for the division lead. It’s rare, considering the A.L. East was once the most feared division in all of baseball, but it’s now a division made up of five incomplete ball clubs that are all good enough to finish first and bad enough to finish in the basement of the division. Joel Sherman compared it to ‘a beauty contest for the ordinary looking’.
However, it’s time for the Yankees to wake up. This won’t last. They can no longer keep pointing at the current A.L. East standings and make excuses. Their current losing streak has sunk the team into dreadful woes, and it’s time to face the facts. The Red Sox are a dominant starting pitcher away from running away with the division and the Baltimore Orioles can turn hot at any point.
Returning back home to the Bronx for Memorial Day Weekend to start a three game series against one of the two bottom dwelling teams in the A.L. West was supposed to be a good thing for the New York Yankees. Yet the combined efforts of Michael Pineda, C.C. Sabathia and Esmil Rogers have allowed a grand total of 17 runs in the third inning of the first two games this weekend alone! Things have gotten so bad that the Yankees had Garrett Jones on the mound pitching for them at one point yesterday. The Yankees did however manager to show some signs of life on Friday battling back to a 10-9 loss, but the Texas Rangers were 18-23 as they traveled to the Bronx on Friday. Dropping a series against them, which they’ve already done, is unacceptable, and hopefully the Yankees can avoid the sweep when they square off against Texas at 8:05 pm tonight on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball.
Changes are coming, and they start tonight. After Branden Pinder was needed for 48 pitches Saturday, 22-year old relief pitching prospect and 2014 2nd round draft pick Jacob Lindgren, a.k.a. the ‘Strikeout Factory’ will be promoted for Sunday’s game. He has a 1.23 ERA this season and 77 strikeouts in 46²/₃ pro innings.
But how much change really lies in the Yankees future? Didi Gregorius, Stephen Drew and Esmil Rogers, the three players who most fans want to see on their way out of towns aren’t going anywhere. According to Sherman, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told The Post no changes were planned. All are staying. At least for now. Brian Cashman said the Yankees need to fix themselves from within.
"“We have to play better,” Cashman said. “We have to clean up our act.”"
How much longer will this go on for?
