Yankees News: The Game Shows Love to Baseball Legend Yogi Berra
One of baseball greatest characters, Yogi Berra, turned 90 years old this Tuesday. Yogi never looked like a baseball player, was an unorthodox hitter, but he was a winner. Yogi Berra has won a staggering 13 World Series, and 10 as a player.
Yogi Berra was just known for his baseball skill, he also has one of the greatest baseball minds, and knows as baseball original philosopher.
Here are some of Yogi’s greatest quotes;
“You’ve got to be very careful if you don’t know where you’re going,” Yogi once told us, “or else you might not get there.”“You can observe a lot by watching”“Baseball is ninety percent mental. The other half is physical.”“It’s like déjà-vu, all over again.”
Not only was Yogi Berra a quote machine, he was also a great person. Yogi was always able to make people laugh. Hank Aaron talked about his first at-bat in the World Series in 1957
“Yogi started yakking at me and said, ‘Hank, the label on your bat is turned the wrong way.’ I said to him, “Yogi, I didn’t come up here to read. I came up to here to hit!’”
Willie Randolph has a very personal connection with Yogi Berra, and told the Daily News about their interactions while Randolph was the manager of the Mets.
“Yogi has always been there for me. When I was the manager of the Mets, during the Subway Series he always made a point to come in my office and talk baseball. I’m sure the Yankee brass wasn’t too crazy about that. Yogi never forgot where I came from, and it meant a lot to me that he would come over to talk.
Mr. Joe Torre talked about how sharp Yogi Berra was when he sat on the bench during spring training games, but Torre talked about how Yogi could make him laugh on a road trip.
“The biggest kick for me on those road trips was when we’d have to make a restroom stop and Yogi would get out of the car and walk into this 7-11 in his Yankee uniform. The looks on the faces of the people in the store! It was priceless. But Yogi was completely unfazed. He had only one mission there and that was to get to the restroom.”
Happy Birthday Lawrence Peter “Yogi” Berra! Let us know what your favorite quote of Yogi’s was.
