Chris Martin Reportedly To DL As Orioles Top Yankees

The New York Yankees fell victim to three Baltimore Orioles´ home runs in a 6-2 loss at Yankee Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Chase Whitley jumped out to an excellent start, recording his first four out with strike outs. But in the third inning Jimmy Paredes homered to put the Orioles up 1-0. Chris Davis added a solo shot in the fourth and Alejandro De Aza followed with a two run home run to make it 4-0. [related  category]
Whitley struggled again in the fifth. Manny Machado doubled and eventually scored on a Delmon Young single to push the Yankee deficit to 5-0. But the Yankees finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth. A single by Chase Headley, a Stephen Drew double, and a sacrifice fly by John Ryan Murphy made it 5-1.
With two outs in the sixth, Joe Girardi replaced Whitley with David Carpenter. Carpenter got Machado to ground out to end the inning. But in the seventh, a Paredes triple and a Young double increased the Baltimore lead to 6-1.
The Yankees put together a rally in the eighth. Carlos Beltran singled to bring home Jacoby Ellsbury. That meant two big hits in the last two games for Beltran, so perhaps he is finally getting into a groove. The Yankees challenged the final out in the ninth, but Brett Gardner was ruled out to end the game.
The biggest news for the day is that Yankees´ reliever Chris Martin is reportedly headed for the disabled list due to right elbow tendinitis. Martin had pitched well until recently, preceding Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller.
Whitley left with two outs in the sixth. He allowed five runs on six hits with five strikeouts. He also walked two and hit two batters. Jose Pirela continued his offensive production with two hits. Wei Yin Chen allowed one run in seven innings for Baltimore. The Yankees´ record goes to 19-12, leaving them still in first place in the American League East.
