On this episode of the Yanks Go Yard Radio Show, brought to you by KNODA.com, I started off the show by talking about how impressive the New York Yankees (9-7) were in taking three of four from the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. Detroit was 11-2 heading into the series, but give credit to the Yankees pitchers for holding a very good Tigers lineup to nine total runs in four games.
The most impressive performance came in the snow flurries on Wednesday night when the Bronx Bombers scored eight runs against David Price in a 13-4 victory. New York passed their first test of the week, but their second test might be even tougher. This weekend, that test comes in the form of their crosstown rivals, the New York Mets (13-3), who are the best team in baseball right now.

Terry Collins’ club is coming into this game on a 11-game win streak, tied for the longest in their franchise history. New York’s offense, even without David Wright, is second in the National League in runs and RBI’s (behind only the Padres). One of their best players on offense is first baseman Lucas Duda. Duda is hitting .351 on the season with one home run and nine RBI’s. They only have ten home runs as a team, but they find ways to score runs.
However, when you talk about the Mets, you have to talk about their starting pitching. Led by Jacob deGrom and Matt Harvey, the Mets’ starters’ ERA is 2.82, second in the NL behind the St. Louis Cardinals. The starters get the attention, but don’t’ sleep on the bullpen. Even with Jenrry Mejia suspended 80 games for PED use, Jeurys Familia has stepped up in and converted on all eight of his save chances to lead the league.
To talk about the Mets, I had two Mets guests on the show. They were Greg Prince, the co-founder of Faith And Fear In Flushing and Jeff Paternostro, the host of the Amazin Avenue Podcast and minor league editor at Amazin Avenue. We discussed all things Subway Series, including a discussion on whether this series in April is too early. Here are the rest of the topics we discussed:
-  Impact of the injuries to catcher Travis d’Arnaud and reliever Jerry Blevins
- Scouting report on the Mets new catcher, Kevin Plawecki
- Breaking down the pitching matchups
- Jacob deGrom (Friday’s Mets starter) not giving up an earned run since the first inning of his first start
- Michael Pineda (Friday’s Yankees starter) giving up one home run in each of his last two starts
- Any concern about Matt Harvey’s (Saturday’s Mets start) ankle sprain?
- The intensity of Harvey
- CC Sabathia (Saturday’s Yankees starter) with a great career against the Mets
- Jon Niese (Sunday’s Mets starter) giving up one run in each of his first three starts
- Nathan Eovaldi (Sunday’s Yankees starter) with a bad track record against the Mets from his days in Miami.
- Mets hitters to watch: Lucas Duda, Curtis Granderson, and Juan Lagares
- Yankees hitters to watch: Stephen Drew and Alex Rodriguez
- What’s been behind the success of Jeurys Familia?
