Yankees Editorial: Alex Rodriguez Is The Yankees Best Player And That’s Not Good

That was some show last night. Alex Rodriguez gave you flashbacks to last decade when he was the best player in the world. A monster solo shot to left center, a clutch homer to left and then a huge single in the eighth to give the Yankees the lead for good. A-Rod has been their best player so far in 2015, from game one. Here’s the thing. That’s not good.

I didn’t expect much from A-Rod. I don’t think anyone one did. I didn’t even expect him to make the opening day roster. I thought his hip would give out, or he would stink and the Yankees would try and just buy him out. Neither of those things have happened.

The Yankees don’t have that one big guy that you can count on. They don’t have an Andrew McCutchen, or a Mike Trout or a Giancarlo Stanton. Robinson Cano was that guy but he’s gone. They have a lot of guys who are support kind of guys. Guys who are not alphas.

Jacoby Ellsbury is a nice player, but he’s paid like someone you can count on like a Stanton or a Trout and he’s not that. The other free agents they added last year in Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran just haven’t worked out well yet. Mark Teixeira is not that at this point in his career.

The Yankees can’t thrive as a team if A-Rod is their best player. He can’t possibly keep up what he’s been doing so far for another six months. He’s too old. It isn’t going to happen. He’s going to need a ton of time off as well because he’s old in order to keep him fresh for the grind.

A- Rod isn’t going to keep this up. For the Yankees to have any chance, other guys need to step up and maybe they need to add a player or two up from the system to help.
