Dellin Betances Looking Forward To Upcoming Games

New York Yankees pitcher Dellin Betances will throw back to back games for the first time this Spring against the Detroit Tigers Tuesday night, and the New York Mets Wednesday afternoon. Betances is extremely excited to get more work in to show not only a improvement on his work, but why he should be the team’s new closer. He has the next two weeks to do so.

Dellin has pitched only four innings so far this Spring. He has four strikeouts, five hits, two earned runs, and a 4.50 ERA. This comparing to Andrew Miller’s five innings with seven Ks, and one earned run. Dellin threw a simulated game Friday and thought he felt stronger than his previous showings before. Expect him to show it in the back to back work he’ll get Tuesday and Wednesday.

The expectations surrounding Dellin might be too big for now though. After such a huge year his rookie season, to go into the next season battling for a closer job is no easy task.

If David Robertson was on the team, Dellin would still be the set up man no matter what. Now however there’s this opening for him to become possibly the next great Yankees closer after Mariano Rivera (and at such a young age). There’s no doubt he can still be that in the future, but if he wants to start that journey now, he will have to show it starting Tuesday.

As for right now Betances sounds positive on this upcoming week. “Every time out I feel a little stronger.” If that’s the case, and he shows it Tuesday and Wednesday, I’m sure Joe will have no hesitation to give him more work to see where he’s at.

Right now Andrew Miller has the edge on the closer position. Miller is a veteran and no stranger to closing games. He’s only pitched one more inning than Dellin this Spring, but all of them are far more productive. This battle is just one of many going on throughout the Yankees team, no matter what position.

Players will have much to prove these last two weeks on Spring ball, young players should take note of Dellin’s hunger to become the next Yankees star.

Joe Girardi is going to have a lot of decisions to make the last week before the regular season starts. Dellin is showing he wants to be the closer already, now he has to show he knows what improvements to make, and that he can be jsut as reliable as he was last year.
