The Yankee offense woke up a little too late as they fell 3-1 today to the Baltimore Orioles. Chase Whitley got the nod today for the Yankees, against the O’s in Sarasota FL. He thew the first three innings, and gave up no runs on 1 strikeout 2 hits and 3 walks.
While he walked too many batters for my liking he produced lots of ground outs compared to fly outs (4-1).
Whitely will provide rotation depth for the Yankees this year if he continues to be a ground ball machine.
Esmil Rogers pitched an inning of relief where he struck out two batters in a 1-2-3 inning. Branden Pinder came in after Rogers gave up 2 runs in the fifth while giving up 4 hits to give the O’s the first lead of the game.
While most of the Yankee starting lineup struggled today, Chase Headley was a bright spot, going 3 for 3 today including a double and a pair singles.
It is still early on in spring and we try not to get too worried, but Didi Gregorius struggled again at the plate, going 0 for 3 with two strikeouts. So far this spring, Didi is hitting well below the Mendoza line at .083. Mark Teixeira also started, and went 1 for 2 with a walk.
The Yankees bats finally woke up in the ninth with a Gary Sanchez home run.
One of the more interesting story lines taking place in Yankee camp is at second base. It is very early, but Stephen Drew is batting .091, Jose Pirela is batting .462, and Robert Refsynder is batting .455. They brought Drew in to solidify second base, but he is not hitting and the two young guys are ready to take his spot. Drew needs to produce or he will be gone sooner rather than later.
For the O’s Wei-Yin Chen got the start and looked strong, giving up zero runs while giving up 1 hit, and striking out 2. Chen also gave up 1 walk. Chen was relieved by one of the young arms Baltimore is relying on this year in Kevin Gausman. Kevin threw two innings in relief giving up 2 hits and not allowing a run.
Manny Macahdo provided a one man show for the Orioles offense today. Manny went 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI. The O’s were able to tack on another run in the 7th on a Ray Navarro home run.
Perhaps the biggest takeaway from today’s Spring Training game is that the Yankees announced Hideki Matsui will be a special assistant to GM Brian Cashman in the middle of the ballgame.
