Scorpions Fading Fast in the AFL

It hasn’t been pretty out in the desert lately in the Arizona Fall League for the Scottsdale Scorpions. Despite the New York Yankees’ prospects doing all they can, the Scorpions dropped their third in a row Tuesday. The Peoria Javelinas took down the Scorpions 5-2.

Much like Monday’s bout, the Javelinas jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Pirates’ prospect barely made it out of the first inning for the Scorpions, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks. Harlan has had a dismal AFL showing, allowing 14 runs over his 11 innings pitched. Yankees right-handed bullpen prospect Caleb Cotham came on to pitch a perfect eight inning. Cotham has settled in after a rough start to the AFL season, allowing only one run over his last four appearances.

The Scorpions didn’t provide much offense Tuesday. The two runs were driven in in consecutive innings, one by Mets’ centerfield prospect Brandon Nimmo and the other by Pirates’ future catcher Elias Diaz. The only Baby Bomber to see action Tuesday was right fielder Aaron Judge. Fresh off his AFL Player of the Week Award, Judge went 1-for-5 on the day.

The loss drops the Scorpions to 10-14 on the season. They are in last place in the AFL East and one game away from being officially eliminated from the chance to play in the Championship Game. New York Mets’ righty Rob Whalen takes the mound to stop the three game losing streak. First pitch is 9:35 PM EST.
