With the season ending when the foul pop landed in Pablo Sandoval‘s glove, it’s time for the off-season and all of the fun trade and free agency rumors. Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal talked on Friday how it’s possible the Angels could move either to help address some other needs.
Well, the Yankees may need a third baseman. Let’s say Pablo Sandoval stays in SF or goes to Boston. Maybe Chase Headley goes to Boston if Sandoval stays. Alex Rodriguez is too old to play third everyday plain and simple.
This is where Freese comes in. Freese hit .260/.321/.383 with 10 homers and 55 RBI in 134 games. Freese only had a walk rate of 7% last year and swung way too much out of the zone (31.1%)
What would it take to get Freese? I don’t really know. They could use some additional pitching depth, maybe someone like David Phelps could be of interest plus a minor leaguer. Especially if the Yankees go out into free agency and grab a pitcher or two that they can use a guy like Phelps to acquire someone else. That move could leave Martin Prado at second and maybe give Rob Refsnyder a little more time to develop and make Jose Pirela a super utility guy who can play everyday at all sorts of positions.
This is the last year Freese is arbitration eligible. It’s a big year for him, and having a season like he did in 2012 could make him serious coin in the free agent market. He’ll be 32 in April.
Freese could be a nice option for the Yankees if the third base market doesn’t break their way.
