AFL Scoreboard: Scorpions Get Stung

It wasn’t a pretty day in the desert for the Baby Bombers. The Arizona Fall League pitted the Scottsdale Scorpions versus the Mesa Solar Sox for a little matinee baseball. This past Tuesday, the Scorpions were able to comeback from a large deficit in an exciting eighth inning rally. Wednesday was not the same as the Scorpions fell 9-3.

Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Tom Harlan had a tough day. He couldn’t make it out of the second inning, pitching to four batters and not recording an out. Before his day was done, he allowed five runs to score. The Scorpions were down 6-0 heading into the bottom of the second. L.J. Mazzilli, son of one time Yankees player and coach Lee Mazzilli and current Mets’ prospect, drilled a three-run home run in the bottom half of the inning. It would be all the offense the Scorpions could muster on the day.

The Yankees’ bats were limited Wednesday as well. Aaron Judge had an O-for day and reigning AFL Player of the Week Greg Bird went 1-for-4 on the day, scoring on Mazzilli’s blast. Alex Smith, the Yanks pitching prospect continued his fall league struggles, allowing one run to cross in the second inning. His ERA is now at 11.81.

The loss brings the Scorpions to 7-6 on the season. They square off against Mesa again tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is slated for 3:35 PM EST.
