AFL 2014: Game 5: Scorpions Victorious
There was a pitching duel in the desert Monday night, and the Scottsdale Scorpions rose the victors. The game pegged Nationals’ pitching prospect Felipe Rivero for the Mesa Solar Sox versus the Pittsburgh Pirates’ top pitching prospect Tyler Glasnow. Both would hold their own in the exciting 2-1 Scorpion win.
Glasnow came out and pitched three solid innings of ball, striking out three and walking just one. Dario Alvarez, the Mets’ pitching prospect who has struggled since his breakout 10-1, 1.10 ERA 2014 season, looked to be back in form Monday night. He went two shutout innings striking out four and picked up his first win of the AFL season. Steven Okert of the Giants organization register his first save of the AFL season.

The Scorpions got both of their runs in bottom of the fourth and that would be all they needed. The first run would come across on a wild pitch. Roman Quinn would score, who was moved to third by a long fly ball by Yankees top offensive prospect Aaron Judge. Josh Hill would later single in Kelby Tomlinson for the second and deciding run.
The Yankees were relatively quiet. Right fielder Aaron Judge and Left fielder Tyler Austin both went 1-for-4 on the night, with Austin snagging his second stolen base of the season. Dante Bichette, Jr. went 0-for-3 with a walk. Greg Bird had his first night off and none of the other Yankees prospects appeared in the game.
The Scorpions are rolling with two wins in a row. They now sit at 3-2. Their next game is Tuesday afternoon at 3:35 PM EST. The Pirates other pitching prospect, Joely Rodriguez takes the mound.
